Principal's Corner April 2017

Principal’s Corner for April 2017

With the statewide GA Milestones  test for students in grades 3-8, I wanted to take a few moments to discuss the assessments we use at West Side to measure students’ progress toward mastering the curriculum. As you remember, our curriculum is set by the state, and grade level standards can be found at The Georgia Standards of Excellence describe what a student should learn during the school year.  You can find more information about these standards and how we have implemented them in Georgia at

We measure students’ progress toward mastering the curriculum with a variety of assessments each year at West Side. In addition to the state standardized tests (the GA Milestones in grades 3-5), the Georgia Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (GKIDS), the STAR Reading, STAR Early Literacy, and the STAR Math tests to determine if students are making adequate progress toward mastering the standards throughout the year. Teachers also work with each other to create and give common assessments and teacher created assessments to measure student progress more frequently than the standardized tests.

As always, if you have questions or concerns about our curriculum or the assessments we use to measure students’ progress, please contact your child’s teacher or email me at or call the school at 706.866.9211.
