Principal’s Corner

March 2017

This month I wanted to take a few moments to discuss several exciting technology innovations that are happening at West Side Elementary. In the past few years, we have installed Promethean boards in every classroom, added a wireless computer network, and added new computers to our computer lab and some classrooms. We have also added ELMO document cameras and new listening centers in many of our classrooms. We now have an IPAD or Chromebook computer for every student to use in grades PreK through 5, so that all of our students can benefit from this new technology. We have also upgraded our wireless network to support our move to this 1 to 1 environment (1 IPAD or Chromebook for each student to use).  Finally, we continue to provide math software to help our students master math facts, fractions, and other math skills and concepts; and reading software to help your child become a better reader.  We hope that your child will be able to access some of this new software outside of school hours from home and/or the public library. If you need to know how to access the software or how your child can login from home to these programs, please contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Culpepper, our computer lab teacher.

All of these new technology tools have been and will be purchased from a variety of sources. We are using funds from the federal Title I program, School Improvement funds, local ESPLOST funds, and fundraiser funds from our coupon book sales and our other school fundraisers. We are very excited that the future looks so bright for our students and hope that you can come volunteer at our school to see some of the new tools in action. If you have comments, suggestions, or questions about how we can use technology to help our students learn, please feel free to contact me by email at or by phone at 706.866.9211.
